You say that this is a "Life Lesson" that is to me not a strong enough description, a "Worldly Truth" is much more aptly a description. If you lesson to more of Southern Rock bands like Lynyrd you will discover that almost all of there songs will have some "Worldly Truth" to them. Some other bands are Outlaws, Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet. If i remember correctly Lynyrd Skynyrd was the 1st band to have 3 lead guitars in the line up, now what is interesting is 2 of the guitarist are like the rest of the band and are Southern boys and use Gibson Guitars and the 3rd member is from California and uses a Fender Guitar, he is the one that came up with opening rift for "Sweet Home Alabama". The combination of the 2 Gibsons and the Fender playing off each other is what gave Lynyrd Skynyrd it such unique and distinctive sound. I am not sure how much the band Free (in '74 Bad Company came out of Free) influenced Lynyrd Skynyrd, but i know they did influenced Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet. Try Blackfoot's the "Wishing Well". Now a song that to me that is as emotionally powerful as "Simple Man" comes from the Lynyrd Skynyrd "1991" is the sixth studio album by, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and is the first album with the new members of the band – Johnny Van Zant, Ed King, and Randall Hall – who replaced the three who had died since the band's last release, that song is "Mama"! But as i have stated if you lesson to this album there is some "Worldly Truth" to every song on that album.

I know you watched the Oakland concert, but the Wonderland is better.
You and everyone else should watch Gary Rossington's documentary about the band. He goes through them creating all this great music at Hell House. Gary. Allen, and Burns strumming until they hit on something, Ronnie would listen closely and then come up with lyrics. Writing nothing down.

I was listening to this song as I gave birth to my only son… it was a gift to his soul from mine… he passed away in Iraq 2006… every time he came home and was redeployed I would sit with him and I would play HIS song before he had to go… he was and will forever be my simple man.

Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant wrote abt life, things that happened to him or friends.
His grandma had died, Gary, guitar player was raised by single mom & they were talkin abt it one day, next thing you know he had lyrics to this song.
An iconic song of theirs cause it kicks ass but also for message.
When they wanted to record it, their producer didn't care for it & said he didn't want to record it. Ronnie said ok, walked him iut to his car, said go do your business in New York. When he got back they recorded it themselves, producer listened & loved it, he even added some organ to it.
They were pretty strong minded, they knew when something was good & wouldn't back down.
Another song Freebird the record company said that song us way too long, it will never get radio play, they held firm & it was recorded at almost 10 min long, they did almost 15 live. To this day, 40+ yrs later it is one of the most, if not the most requested song of all time. People play it at Funerals, wedding receptions, you go to any rock or country concert you will usually hear someone yell FREEBIRD.
Yiu said you are musician & like to take inspiration from different places which is very smart.
These guys all came from humble beginnings, most raised by single moms but they started band when some were 12-13 yrs old. They practiced their craft every day all day, like any other job, prob weekends as well. They knew what they wanted & worked super hard to get there & if they truly believed in a song they didn't care what anyone thought, they stayed true to themselves & their music & had very close relationship with their fans. Here we are 40+ yrs later & these guys still have a devoted following, we still grieve & miss them.

You might just as well go ahead and do "Free Bird", I think it, Stairway To Heaven, and Hotel California are a few of the most famous songs to react to.
